Observation Narrative
Plot was located near the top of a large, smooth, convexly sloping metabasalt outcrop. The vegetation is open, with trees and shrubs only on the margins. Patches of Schizachyrium scoparium and other graminoids is characteristic of depressions and crevices with organic soil. A slight concavity in the outcrop that is periodically wet with run-off from seepage contains large mats of the moss Grimmia laevigata which, in turn, support hundreds of clumps of Talinum teretifolium. Lichens also have very high cover on the drier rock surfaces and include Xanthoparmelia conspersa, Lasallia papulosa, Rhizoplaca subdiscrepens, Diploschistes scruposus, Physcia sp., Dermatocarpon luridum (wet spots), Flavoparmelia baltimorensis, and numerous unidentified crusts.
