Observation Narrative
Plot is located on a short, northwest-facing ravine slope along a tributary to the York River. Forest vegetation here is characterized by large-diameter Quercus alba (outside plot), Q. montana, and Fagus grandifolia, with a dense evergreen understory of Kalmia latifolia and Ilex opaca var. opaca. Few herbs occur; those present are near the top of the slope close to a wood road, which allows more light to the ground. This stand is part of a mature and outstanding example of Piedmont / Coastal Plain Oak - Beech / Heath Forest that covers approximately 1700 ac on interfluves of the York River State Park and vicinity.
