Observation Narrative
This is a large, outstanding, and very wet example of a Coastal Plain seepage swamp with calcareous soils. Fraxinus pennsylvanica and Nyssa biflora dominate the overstory, while the understory is patchy and quite open. Unlike similar plots from this area (e.g., YRSP005, YRSP006), this sample does not have extensive hummocks; thus characteristic hummock species such as Carex bromoides ssp. bromoides and Packera aurea, which require better drainage, occur only at low cover. The herb layer is heavily patch-dominated by species of mucky hollows, i.e., Bidens laevis, Pilea fontana, and Saururus cernuus.
