Observation Narrative
The plot captures a small area in an extensive upland oak/heath forest where Pinus strobus is a major overstory associate. Except for the presence of this conifer, the stand is compositionally similar to adjacent forests. This area of Lake Anna State Park is known as the "Big Woods," and has a history of repeated cutting, although stands are now medium-age. Soils are weathered from metamorphosed felsic volcanic rocks and are extremely oligotrophic. Based on the presence of scattered butt scars on oaks and the general character of the landscape and vegetation, fire has probably been a frequent disturbance in the past.
