Observation Narrative
This plot appears to represent the oldest, least disturbed forest vegetation on the north slope of Bald Knob, a classic western Piedmont mafic monadnock located just outside the town of Rocky Mount. The stand is dominated by medium- to large-diameter (50-90 cm DBH) Quercus rubra, Q. montana, Q. alba, Carya ovalis, and Liriodendron tulipifera; Cercis candensis dominates the shrub layer and herbaceous diversity if fairly high, although no individual species attain very high cover. However, this stand nearly lacks understory trees, and the only sapling recruitment is of Fraxinus americana and Magnolia acuminata. The reasons for this structural condition are unclear. Downslope, the topography is somewhat less steep and even-aged Liriodendron tulipifera is more prominent in the stand, suggesting more recent logging or clearing in that area.
Stand (in and around plot) has many Ailanthus seedlings and saplings "waiting" to be released by gap disturbances. Although a few stumps were seen near the plot, it appears that the upper slope has not been logged as recently as the lower slopes below.
