Observation Narrative
The plot is located on the massive actinolite schist outcrops that cover the east side of Bald Knob, a classic western Piedmont mafic monadnock. The size of the exposures at this site presented a rare opportunity to sample a 400 square meter herbaceous outcrop plot. This sample is located well downslope from the summit on a gentle, convex part of the outcrop. Vegetation cover is sparser and less species-rich than that in plot FRAN013, and more typical of the greater outcrop vegetation at this site. Conspicuous and abundant non-vascular species in the plot include Grimmia cf. pilifera, Polytrichum sp., Xanthoparmelia conspersa, Cladonia subtenuis, C. uncialis, Cladonia sp., Fuscidea recensa, and a white Porpidia sp. Bald Knob is one of only five known sites for an undescribed and unnamed Talinum sp., which is one of the dominant lithophytic herbs.
Soil development only in shallow pockets around trees and shrubs; most of plot lacking soil.
0-10 cm: reddish brown fine loam with many stones
10+ cm: bedrock
