Observation Narrative
A very small but nevertheless representative example of a woodland seep saturated by basic groundwater emerging from underlying amphibolite along a headwaters branch of Buffalo Branch. Similar woodlands are found along other head branches of Buffalo Branch, and more extensively in the Long Mountain Run drainage. The stand here is linear and extends for perhaps 200 m along the stream. The adjoining flats, as well as the seep itself, support young trees that regenerated after past logging. Due to the somewhat discontinuous occurrence of herbaceous patches along the stream, the sample size was limited to 100 square meters in a linear 5 x 20 m quadrat.
