Observation Narrative
Plot location: Prince Edward-Gallion State Forest, ca. 80 m south of the Sandy River Forest Road at a point 0.35 km west of its jct. with Rt. 613.
A typical stand of medium-age Piedmont mixed oak / heath forest on a xeric, nutrient-poor upland. Many of the oaks regenerated from stump sprouts, and pines (P. echinata and P. virginiana) were formerly more frequent in the stand. Deciduous ericads (Gaylussacia baccata, Vaccinium spp.) form large clones in a low shrub layer. Herbaceous plants are extremely sparse. Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica, and Pinus strobus are all invading the understory and can be expected to increase in importance in the absence of fire.
