Observation Narrative
A large, thinly wooded interdune swale that was dry at the time of sampling. This wetland is typically filled with 30-40 cm of water from the early winter through early summer, and sometimes later (GPF pers. obs.). When flooded, floating Nuphar advena dominates beneath the very open canopy of Nyssa biflora. The latter occurs as clumped coppice sprouts, and may have regenerated following a catastrophic fire. At the type of sampling, the general aspect is of an open woodland with scattered clumps of Cephalanthus and areas of dense annual graminoids (Cyperus erythrorhizos, Panicum verrucosum, P. dichotomiflorum) and areas of bare soil with stranded, withered leaves of Nuphar.
