Note: the digital geologic map unit (sp - Swamp deposits) is incorrect and does not account for deep sand deposits that form the dunes in First Landing/Seashore State Park.
This plot, located in a small dune hollow near the picnic area just south of Shore Drive, captures the most ocean-ward maritime forest at the Park. Short, contorted Quercus virginiana overwhelmingly dominate the overstory, with occasional emergent Pinus taeda also present. A variety of evergreen shrubs, including Ilex opaca, Ilex vomitoria, and Osmanthus americanus are characteristic of the understory.
