Observation Narrative
Note: the digital geologic map unit (sp - Swamp deposits) is incorrect and does not account for deep sand deposits that form the dunes in First Landing/Seashore State Park.
Plot captures the xeric end of gradient for maritime forest in the Park, where these forests are somewhat transitional to a dune woodland. The very open overstory is dominated by stunted Quercus nigra and Pinus taeda. Shrubby Quercus virginiana is present, indicating a site relatively close to the ocean. The sampling quadrat encompasses and area from the crest to the slope base on an east-facing dune ridge. Highbush blueberries here are ambiguous, possibly hybrids between Vaccinium formosum and V. fuscatum.
