Observation Narrative
Floodplain terrace along Vaughan Creek, a short distance upstream from its confluence with the Appomattox River. Vegetation is a classic "rich" alluvial forest dominated by mixed hardwoods, Acer negundo and Lindera benzoin in the understory, and a dense vernal cover of leafy forbs. Packera aurea is phenomenally abundant here, with Mertensia virginica second in importance in the herb layer. Cover estimates for woody plants were somewhat tentative, as all were just beginning to leaf out. A summer resample is needed.
