Observation Narrative
Mature, mixed mesophytic forest on a steep, north-facing dolomitic slope above the New River. Soils here have high calcium, magnesium, manganese, and zinc. The stand is composed of medium-sized to large-diameter trees of Acer saccharum, Tilia americana var. heterophylla, Aesculus flava, Quercus rubra, Quercus muhlenbergii, Fraxinus americana, and Carya ovata. Acer saccharum, Ostrya virginiana, and Staphylea trifolia are the most abundant understory species, while the herb layer contains a lush assemblage of nutrient-demanding colonial forbs. This stand has been undisturbed from quite some time and represents a magnificent occurrence of the sugar maple-basswood-buckeye forest association that characterizes rich soils of the southern Appalachians.
