Observation Narrative
The plot is similar to NTSP004, NTSP005, and NTSP007, all of which represent rich, mesophytic forests on calcareous substrates. This site is a very steep, bluff-like, north-facing slope weathered from Shady dolomite and subtending the New River Trail and floodplain. Compared to compositionally similar stands nearby, the vegetation of the sample site is relatively mature, with large trees of Aesculus flava, Tilia americana var. heterophylla, Liriodendron tulipifera, Fraxinus americana, and Fagus grandifolia (overhanging plot) forming a mixed overstory. Acer saccharum dominates the understory. The herb layer contains a lush and diverse assemblage of nutrient-demanding ferns, forbs, and spring ephemerals.
