Observation Narrative
Oak-hickory stand on slope near the entrance to Paul State Forest on Rt. 613. Plot documents a classic, decadent white oak forest with virtually no oak regeneration and an understory of more tolerant species - primarily Acer rubrum, Carya spp., and some Liriodendron in gaps. DOF aged this stand at 192 years. That age is probably representative of some of the large white oaks, but the stand has been thinned, probably to remove faster-growing and shorter-lived red and black oaks. This site appears to be more acidic than much of Paul State Forest, which supports rather lush forests of oak and tulip-poplar in various stages of succession. Nutrient-demanding plants are absent, and the herb layer in the plot and adjacent part of the forest is sparse to patchy and dominated by woody seedlings.
