Observation Narrative
Plot was positioned on a high-elevation ridge crest supporting a stand of stunted oak-hickory forest. Quercus rubra and Q. alba are the leading canopy dominants, with scattered Q. velutina and Q. montana also present. Carya ovalis and Ostrya virginiana are the leading understory dominants, while the herb layer is dominated by a clone of Carex pensylvanica. Many other graminoids and forbs occur at lower cover. This stand probably regenerated following multiple disturbances a century or more ago, but appears to have developed without disturbance for a considerable period of time.
