Observation Narrative
Vegetation documented by this plot is a rich cove forest with a "northern hardwood" flavor that is unusual for the relatively low-elevation setting. The habitat is a lower, northeast-facing, very bouldery/stony slope above the North River at the foot of Shenandoah Mountain (elev. 829 m). The mixed overstory contains Acer saccharum, Betula alleghaniensis, Tilia americana, Tsuga canadensis, Betula lenta, and Carya ovata. The shrub layer is rather sparse, with Hamamelis virginiana contributing the greatest cover. Laportea canadensis and Viola canadensis are the most abundant species of the lush herb layer, but many additional forbs occur at lower cover.
Soil could not be collected in plot, which has interstitial, blackish organic deposits among deeply piled sandstone boulders and stones. Sample collected just downslope from plot on a small colluvial bench; the A horizon here is a medium to slightly reddish-brown, extremely stony loam.
