Observation Narrative
This plot is similar to JRNF055 but was located on a submesic, west-facing side slope of Lost Mountain. Medium-sized chestnut and northern red oaks dominate the overstory but no oak recruitment is present except for a temporary flush of seedlings. Beech and other mesophytic trees are abundant in understory and will eventually replace the oaks in the absence of fire. This site has a well-developed and relatively diverse herb layer featuring dominance patches of Galax urceolata, Medeola virginiana, and Thelypteris noveboracensis.
