Observation Narrative
This plot was placed in a sheltered, northeast-facing ravine supporting a mature stand of rich cove forest with magnificant trees and a lush herb layer. This stand is much older than and starkly different from the acidic forests that cover most of Lost Mountain, and it evidently escaped cutting when the mountain was logged during the period 1900-1925. While not high by absolute standards, soil calcium in this ravine is significantly higher than that of surrounding areas. Dominant canopy trees in the mixed stand of Acer saccharum, Aesculus flava, Magnolia acuminata, Fraxinus americana, Tilia americana var. heterophylla, Acer rubrum, and Quercus rubra range up to the 82 cm DBH and 34 m tall. Because of the size and diversity of trees, a 1000 releve was sampled. The herb layer is a lush and diverse tangle of nutrient-demanding ferns and forbs, the most abundant of which are Caulophyllum thalictroides, Laportea canadensis, Deparia acrostichoides, Viola blanda, and Dryopteris intermedia. The successional trajectory of this stand is toward increased dominance by Acer saccharum and Aesculus flava, which together greatly dominate the understory.
