Description: This shrubland alliance of southwestern California grows on steep, north-facing slopes with colluvial-derived soils between 50 and 800 m elevation. Precipitation is strongly seasonal, with the majority falling between November and May. Yearly rainfall totals about 60 cm. Summers are warm and dry, though temperatures may be tempered by the proximity to marine air. ~Salvia leucophylla$ is an important to dominant species in the shrub canopy, usually in the company of ~Artemisia californica$. Other shrubs present may include ~Salvia mellifera, Salvia apiana, Diplacus aurantiacus, Eriogonum fasciculatum$, and ~Isocoma menziesii$. Emergent individuals of ~Juglans californica, Quercus agrifolia, Malosma laurina, Rhus integrifolia$, and ~Sambucus mexicana$ may also be present. The variable herbaceous layer may be dominated by annual graminoids.
