Description: Closed upper canopy very strongly dominated by <i>Carapa guianensis</i> or rarely mingled with some exceptionally tall individuals of the 20- to 25-m tall second canopy layer (e.g., <i>Calophyllum utile</i>). As opposed to the upper one, the second canopy layer is rich in species. Most common associates are <i>Calophyllum utile, Sloanea curatellifolia, Dipholis jubilla, Guarea guidonia, Cupania americana, Buchenavia tetraphylla (= Buchenavia capitata), Ficus wrightii</i>, and the Cuban royal palm <i>Roystonea elata (= Roystonea regia)</i>. Other palms (e.g., <i>Bactris cubensis, Prestoea acuminata var. montana (= Prestoea montana)</i>, and <i>Calyptronoma clementis ssp. orientensis</i>) are commonly found along creeks, between the second and third canopy layer. Most characteristic species of the 6- to 15-m tall third canopy layer are <i>Oxandra lanceolata, Oxandra laurifolia, Cordia sulcata, Miconia elata, Miconia dodecandra, Cyathea araneosa</i>, and <i>Cnemidaria horrida (= Hemitelia horrida)</i>. Northeastern Cuba: Moa region, and in the Toa, Jaguani and Duaba river basins.
