Description: This alliance is found in the semi-arid rainshadow-affected areas of central and southern Idaho. Stands occur on steep, south-facing canyon slopes composed of volcanic tuffs at low elevations, from roughly 1580-1890 m. This substrate is typically unstable, with constant downslope movement of soil surface layers, and a high shrink-swell ratio. Chronic soil disturbance is therefore a major factor in the species composition of the alliance, which includes several endemics of the Challis Volcanics substrate. These grasslands are characterized by a sparse herbaceous species layer that is dominated by ~Leymus salinus ssp. salmonis$, a perennial grass species commonly considered a bunchgrass due to its cespitose form (but which typically has rhizomes), and the perennial forbs ~Enceliopsis nudicaulis$ or ~Lupinus argenteus$. The grass variety is one of the Challis endemics, while ~Enceliopsis nudicaulis$ is disjunct from its principle range in the Great Basin. Several other species of the Challis endemic flora apparently occur in this alliance, but a more specific list is not available, and no other information is available on species composition.
