Description: This alliance includes natural forests occurring in the Coastal Plain west of the Mississippi River, managed forests in the East and West Gulf coastal plains, and successional stands in Piedmont North Carolina, South Carolina (?), and Georgia. Forests in this alliance dominate the landscape in the region between longleaf pine belt and Ouachitas, and west of longleaf pine range in Texas. This vegetation also occurs in the Red Hills of the Florida Panhandle, and other areas in the East Gulf Coastal Plain as well. These are successional stands both within and to the north of the range of longleaf pine. Within the range of longleaf pine, this vegetation may occur on "peninsulas" in the Fragipan Loam Hills Subsection of Louisiana, and on hills in the western part of this subsection. Semi-natural or successional stands may be included here which are dominated by this combination of pines. These are found on sites which would have been naturally dominated by ~Pinus palustris$. Some clarification of the relative "naturalness" of this combination of pines on various sites and regions needs to be attempted.
