Description: Vegetation types within this alliance are frequent in dry to moderately moist, open or thinly wooded, often grassy slopes in the Rocky Mountains. Elevations range from 2400 m in Arizona to 3900 m in Colorado. However, types are typically found near timberline. Stands are found on south-oriented, stabilized, fine-talus slopes. Slopes range from 5-35%. Soils are loamy and skeletal with a pH range of 5.2-5.8. Vegetation types within this alliance are described as short alpine or subalpine sod grasslands. ~Carex siccata (= Carex foenea)$ dominates the graminoid layer. Several forbs can be codominant; they include ~Geum rossii, Cerastium arvense$, and ~Trifolium dasyphyllum$. ~Carex siccata$ commonly occurs as the herbaceous layer in coniferous associations such as ~Abies concolor, Abies lasiocarpa$, and ~Picea pungens$.
