Description: Vegetation types within this short subalpine or alpine sod grasslands alliance are common to locally abundant in high-mountain meadows and clearings. They prefer rocky, especially alpine and subalpine, slopes and clearings. Elevations range from 2700-4200 m. They occur in late-melting snowpatches, mainly on eastern slopes. The habitat is subxeric to mesic, with very late-melting snow cover, cool to cold, and heavily snow-eroded in most stands. Occurrences exist on disturbed sites, typically in the center of snowpatches. Soils are very thin. pH increases with depth in most stands, and the profiles do not show much evidence of leaching. Soils have low organic matter accumulation. Vegetation types within this alliance are dominated by ~Carex ebenea$ or ~Carex haydeniana$. ~Carex ebenea$ types typically are codominant with ~Carex microptera (= Carex festivella)$. Forb species can include ~Trifolium parryi, Potentilla pulcherrima, Erigeron speciosus var. macranthus, Fragaria virginiana ssp. glauca (= Fragaria glauca), Valeriana edulis, Penstemon procerus$, and ~Pedicularis parryi$. ~Phleum alpinum$ is a common graminoid that also occurs with ~Carex ebenea$. The ~Carex haydeniana$ stands in Colorado typically occur with ~Poa arctica$ and ~Carex perglobosa$. Associated forbs in the Colorado stands include ~Sibbaldia procumbens, Geum rossii (= Acomastylis rossii), Packera crocata$, and ~Potentilla diversifolia$.
