Description: This alpine grassland alliance occurs in the Olympic and Cascade mountains in Washington and Oregon, and the Rocky Mountains in Montana and Colorado. Stands are found on undulating alpine meadows, subalpine parks and on ridges. Sites may be nearly level to steep slopes and typically occur on the warmer and drier southern to western aspects. Soils are well-drained, coarse-textured and are generally deep but may be shallow and rocky. Substrates are derived from colluvium and residuum from sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks. Vegetation included in this alliance is characterized by a moderate to dense cover of graminoids dominated by ~Festuca idahoensis$. Codominant species may include ~Delphinium glareosum, Phlox diffusa ssp. longistylis$, and ~Carex scirpoidea$. The forb layer is often diverse. Other characteristic species include ~Arenaria capillaris, Campanula rotundifolia, Eriophyllum lanatum, Lathyrus nevadensis, Lupinus arcticus ssp. subalpinus (= Lupinus latifolius var. subalpinus), Polygonum bistortoides, Phlox hoodii$, and ~Geum triflorum$. Occasional trees may be scattered in these stands such as individuals of ~Abies lasiocarpa$. Diagnostic of this alliance is the ~Festuca idahoensis$-dominated herbaceous layer that occurs in the alpine and upper subalpine zones
