Stands are located on soils derived from sedimentary (sandstone) and igneous (basalt and granite) parent materials. ~Festuca brachyphylla$ is the dominant species in the herbaceous canopy. ~Trisetum spicatum$ is the most common associate. Other associated species include ~Artemisia scopulorum, Geum rossii, Lupinus lepidus, Lupinus sericeus, Polygonum bistortoides$, and ~Pseudocymopterus montanus$.
