Description: This alliance includes forb-dominated subalpine meadows from the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Stands occur below treeline at elevation from 2900-3800 m in swales, depressions and protected areas. Sites may be flat to steeply sloped, but all are moist during most of the growing season. Soils are moderately deep; the upper horizons are well-drained, but stay moist because of a slowly permeable dense clay in the lower horizons. Stands have a dense herbaceous layer about 1 m tall that is dominated by the perennial forb ~Ligusticum porteri$. This vegetation has high species richness. Other associated species include forbs such as ~Vicia americana, Lathyrus lanszwertii var. leucanthus (= Lathyrus leucanthus), Geranium viscosissimum var. viscosissimum$, and ~Helianthella quinquenervis$ from lower elevation stands, and ~Lupinus parviflorus ssp. myrianthus, Geranium viscosissimum var. incisum (= Geranium nervosum), Senecio crassulus$, and ~Polygonum bistortoides (= Bistorta bistortoides)$ from the upper subalpine/alpine ecotone. A few graminoids are frequent like ~Elymus trachycaulus, Festuca thurberi, Phleum alpinum (= Phleum commutatum), Poa alpina$, or ~Trisetum spicatum$, but have sparse cover.
