Description: This vegetation type occurs in snowmelt basins and subalpine meadows of the northern Cascade Range at 1800-2200 m of elevation. These habitats receive abundant (100-250 cm) precipitation and accumulate very heavy snowpacks in winter. These sites are subirrigated by snowmelt during most of the short growing season. These are pioneer or 'rawmark' communities, which may develop into other communities with time, depending upon local soil characteristics. Soils are typically derived from volcanic regolith or other skeletal materials. A ground layer of ~Luetkea pectinata$ and ~Saxifraga tolmiei$ characterizes this vegetation. Associated herbaceous species include ~Antennaria lanata, Arenaria capillaris, Minuartia obtusiloba (= Arenaria obtusiloba), Carex spectabilis, Luzula piperi, Hieracium gracile, Festuca brachyphylla, Carex nigricans, Carex scirpoidea, Carex phaeocephala, Carex breweri$, and ~Sibbaldia procumbens$. ~Salix cascadensis, Phyllodoce empetriformis$, or ~Cassiope mertensiana$ may form a very sparse shrub layer. This vegetation typically occurs in close association with wet meadow communities dominated by ~Carex$ spp. and/or ~Salix cascadensis$, but generally is found at sites where snow melts earlier in the summer season.
