Description: Vegetation in this alliance occurs in the alpine tundra in the mountains of Colorado and Wyoming. Stands are found in the upper alpine zone between 3350 and 3650 m elevation on broad, gently sloping ridgetops that are snow-covered in winter. Stands form alpine meadows and have a thick cover of herbaceous plants and a small number of exposed cobbles and boulders. The soils are poorly developed, have a high organic matter content, and are classified as Inceptisols (Cryochrepts). A number of species occur in the alliance and in relatively high abundance. ~Trifolium dasyphyllum$ is the dominant species in the herbaceous canopy. ~Minuartia obtusiloba, Phlox pulvinata, Tetraneuris grandiflora, Tetraneuris acaulis, Artemisia pattersonii, Geum rossii$, and ~Mertensia oblongifolia (= Mertensia viridis)$ are common forb associates. ~Kobresia myosuroides, Carex rupestris$, and ~Helictotrichon mortonianum$ are constant graminoid associates. A number of forb species, including ~Trifolium dasyphyllum, Minuartia obtusiloba$, and ~Phlox pulvinata$, form large mats that cover the ground. The cryptogam layer has a moderate cover and diversity of mainly lichen species. ~Caloplaca holocarpa, Flavocetraria nivalis (= Cetraria nivalis), Vulpicida tilesii (= Cetraria tilesii)$, and ~Thamnolia subuliformis$ are the most common lichens.
