Description: The ~~Lomatium martindalei$ Herbaceous Alliance (A.1647)$$ occurs on some of the peaks of the Oregon Coast Ranges, ranging from 750-1250 m elevation. The peaks are composed of intrusive igneous bedrock and in scattered localities support areas of non-forested meadows, known as grass balds. These balds are small openings in areas otherwise heavily forested; implying presence of this alliance is due to an unusual combination of topo-edaphic factors. This alliance is found in these non-forested patches, adjacent to bedrock outcrops and restricted to shallow, rocky and well-drained soils. These herbaceous meadows are dominated by a mix of perennial forbs, such as ~Lomatium martindalei, Lupinus lepidus$, and ~Agoseris heterophylla$. Several grass species can also be common, including ~Koeleria macrantha$ and ~Aira praecox$ (introduced from Europe). The nonvascular layer is important in this alliance and is composed of mosses and, probably, lichens. Nonvascular species present are not known.
