Name: A.1667
Reference: EcoArt 2002
Description: This lush herbaceous vegetation has been described from drainages in the lower alpine zone near treeline in Colorado (3300-3500 m elevation), and montane and subalpine areas in western Montana and central Oregon (1230-2030 m elevation). Stands are narrow and occur on the banks of high-gradient ephemeral streams. Sites are cold, moist and may be shaded by nearby trees. They accumulate deep snowpack in winter and are temporarily flooded in the spring during snowmelt. Substrates are typically shallow, rocky and derived from alluvium. Soils are saturated near the surface most of the growing season. Stands have a relatively tall, moderately dense to dense herbaceous layer (50-100% cover), that is dominated by the perennial forb ~Senecio triangularis$. The forb layer is diverse. Associated forbs include mesic montane, subalpine and alpine species such as ~Aconitum columbianum, Aquilegia$ spp., ~Epilobium$ spp., ~Ligusticum filicinum, Ligusticum grayi, Mitella pentandra, Parnassia fimbriata, Thalictrum occidentale, Trollius laxus$, and many others. Graminoids such as ~Carex$ spp., ~Elymus glaucus$, and ~Juncus$ spp. have relatively sparse cover (<25%). Scattered short and dwarf-shrubs, including ~Ribes lacustre, Vaccinium membranaceum$, and ~Vaccinium scoparium$, may be present. Some stands are also shaded by nearby conifers. Many stands have a patchy appearance because of high cover of boulders and logs.
