Description: The ~~Pinus ponderosa$ Sparsely Vegetated Alliance (A.1859)$$ is found in the lower foothills zone of a portion of the southern Rocky Mountains. This alliance occurs on sand dunes deposited against lower western slopes by prevailing strong, westerly winds. It occupies deep, sandy soils of stabilized sand dunes, from 5900-6300 feet in elevation. Soils are very dry due to the porous nature of the sands. This is a very sparse woodland alliance, with scattered trees of ~Pinus ponderosa$ and ~Juniperus monosperma$. There is a sparse shrub layer, composed of ~Poliomintha incana$ and ~Cercocarpus montanus$, with 1-5% cover. The herbaceous layer is sparse, with perennial grasses contributing the most cover. These include several species characteristic of sandy, dry substrates such as ~Achnatherum hymenoides (= Oryzopsis hymenoides), Sporobolus contractus, Andropogon hallii$, and ~Muhlenbergia pungens$.
