Description: This alliance occurs in a variety of disturbed habitats in the southwestern deserts from southern California to the Sonoran Desert, north into the southeastern Great Basin. Stands may occur as either wetland/riparian or upland vegetation. Sites include washes and palustrine environments, valley bottoms, and alluvial flats. Wetland substrates are well-drained, coarse-textured soils that are moderately acidic to slightly saline. Upland substrates are shallow, coarse-textured soils often with a desert pavement. Disturbance from flooding, burning, and grazing animals creates habitat for this type. The vegetation is characterized by an open, xeromorphic shrub layer dominated by ~Hymenoclea salsola$. Other shrubs and dwarf-shrubs present may include ~Atriplex confertifolia, Bebbia juncea, Brickellia incana, Senna armata (= Cassia armata), Ephedra californica, Encelia farinosa, Ericameria paniculata, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Larrea tridentata, Opuntia echinocarpa, Opuntia basilaris, Psorothamnus schottii$, or ~Salazaria mexicana$. Occasional emergent tall shrubs or small trees may be present such as ~Acacia greggii, Chilopsis linearis, Olneya tesota, Parkinsonia florida$, or ~Psorothamnus spinosus$. The herbaceous layer is generally sparse and often dominated by annual species, especially the introduced annual ~Bromus$ spp. such as ~Bromus madritensis$ and ~Bromus rubens$.
