Name: Juncus falcatus Temporarily Flooded Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This alliance occurs in deflation plains and topographic depressions of coastal dunes along the northwestern Pacific Coast in Oregon. Precipitation averages 120-200 cm annually, falling mostly as rain. Temperatures are cool in summer with abundant fog, and frost is infrequent. These habitats typically have standing fresh or brackish water on the surface for 1-3 months per year. Soils are moist stabilized sands with little organic material and are nutrient-poor. These communities typically contain a discontinuous ground layer of Juncus falcatus. Trifolium wormskioldii is often codominant. Other herbaceous associates include Symphyotrichum subspicatum (= Aster subspicatus), Sisyrinchium californicum, Holcus lanatus, and Mimulus guttatus. Other herbaceous species in the deflation swales where this alliance occurs are Carex obnupta and Argentina egedii ssp. egedii (= Potentilla pacifica) in microhabitats with a somewhat longer hydroperiod, and Typha latifolia around the edges of permanent dune ponds. Adjacent vegetation is varied, from dune front associations of Leymus mollis - Abronia latifolia, Ammophila arenaria, and Poa macrantha - Lathyrus littoralis on adjacent active dunes, to Pinus contorta and Picea sitchensis forests at the landward edge. Adjacent, wetter swale or marsh habitats often contain Salix - Myrica wet shrublands and/or Carex obnupta wet meadows.
