Description: This alliance occurs in foothills and mountains of the Mojave Desert and extends into adjacent areas. This wooded shrubland forms an elevational band above desert scrub and below ~Pinus monophylla - Juniperus osteosperma$ woodlands. Sites include ridges, slopes, pediments and ravines. Substrates are well-drained and rocky. The vegetation is characterized by a moderately dense, mixed xeromorphic evergreen short-shrub layer with an open (10-20% cover), emergent small-tree (large-shrub) layer. The tree layer is usually composed solely of ~Juniperus osteosperma$, although scattered ~Pinus monophylla$ trees may be present. The short-shrub layer generally has over 25% cover and always exceeds the tree cover. Shrub associates include ~Ambrosia dumosa, Artemisia tridentata, Atriplex confertifolia, Atriplex confertifolia, Coleogyne ramosissima, Ephedra nevadensis, Ephedra viridis, Ericameria teretifolia, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Grayia spinosa, Gutierrezia microcephala, Purshia glandulosa, Purshia tridentata, Salvia dorrii, Tetradymia axillaris$, or ~Yucca baccata$. The herbaceous layer is generally sparse and composed of graminoids such as ~Achnatherum speciosum$ or ~Pleuraphis jamesii$.
