Name: Calamagrostis breweri Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This subalpine and alpine sod grassland of California and Oregon occurs on dry meadows, flats, and slopes from 1300-3800 m elevation. Optimal habitats have subsurface moisture. The precipitation regime where this alliance occurs is strongly seasonal, with most precipitation falling in the winter months. Most precipitation in the upper elevational range falls as snow. Summers are very dry. This alliance forms large stands, which often intergrade with other meadow, forest, and woodland alliances. Calamagrostis breweri as an important or dominant grass in the herbaceous layer, with Ptilagrostis kingii as an important canopy species. Other herbs may include Oreostemma alpigenum (= Aster alpigenus), Penstemon heterodoxus, Juncus mertensianus, Kalmia polifolia, Vaccinium caespitosum, Phyllodoce breweri, Phyllodoce spp., Potentilla spp., Carex filifolia, Trisetum spicatum, Erigeron spp., Deschampsia caespitosa, and Achillea millefolium var. occidentalis. Emergent shrubs, such as Eriogonum nudum, may be present.
