Description: This alliance, found in the western United States, occurs on flat to gently rolling sites, often with fine soils. Stands can be found on uplands or dry alluvial plains. The herbaceous layer is composed of moderately open to moderately dense mid grasses and short grasses. The shrub layer is typically 10-30% but may be higher in some stands. Pascopyrum smithii is the dominant species, typically accompanied by Bouteloua gracilis, Koeleria macrantha, Nassella viridula, Sphaeralcea coccinea, and Hesperostipa comata (= Stipa comata). Artemisia tridentata is the most abundant shrub.
