Name: Abies lasiocarpa / Mertensia ciliata Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This plant association is a heavily shaded forest with no shrubs and a thick line of wildflowers lining the stream edge. It is a common community in the subalpine zone along first- and second-order streams. Mertensia ciliata is nearly always present but can sometimes be absent. Other forbs consistently present include Cardamine cordifolia, Saxifraga odontoloma (= Micranthes odontoloma) and Senecio triangularis. Salix drummondiana, Lonicera involucrata, and Ribes spp. can be present, but with less than 10% cover. At high elevations, Vaccinium myrtillus, typically an upland species, can intergrade with this riparian plant association on the streambanks.
