Name: Pinus engelmannii / Muhlenbergia longiligula Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This highly diverse `Madrean' woodland association is restricted to the isolated `sky island' mountain ranges of southern Arizona and northern Mexico and possibly occur in the Animas Mountains of southwestern New Mexico. In the U.S., it is known only from the Canelo Hills plus the Santa Rita and the Chiricahua mountains, but it may be more prevalent in Mexico. This association occurs on moderate to steep slopes of northerly aspects or on benches. Elevations range from 1700-2100 m (5560-6900 feet), and sites are warm and dry. The association is characterized by an open canopy of Pinus engelmannii with Pinus cembroides, Pinus edulis, or Juniperus deppeana in the understory. Quercus emoryi, Quercus arizonica, or Quercus gambelii may be common to well-represented as shrubs. The herb layer is characteristically grassy, with Muhlenbergia longiligula well-represented and dominant. Muhlenbergia emersleyi and Panicum bulbosum may also be well-represented, but the remainder of the herbs are sparse and scattered.
