Name: Danthonia californica - Festuca idahoensis Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: These communities are known from gently rolling basalt and rhyolitic plateaus of the Owyhee Uplands and Blue Mountains ecoregional sections in Idaho and Oregon. Stands are frequently observed in shallow, cobbly ephemeral washes. Shallow ashy loess and clay soils are intermixed with abundant cobbles and stones and overlay an impervious claypan or bedrock. Elevation ranges from 1220-1830 m (4000-6000 feet). Species composition is documented from relatively few stands. Herbaceous cover is typically low. Danthonia californica, Festuca idahoensis, and Poa secunda occur with varying abundance. Associated herbaceous species are Pyrrocoma uniflora (= Haplopappus uniflorus), Arenaria congesta, Erigeron chrysopsidis, Eriogonum caespitosum, and Epilobium brachycarpum (= Epilobium paniculatum). Danthonia californica associations of southwestern Oregon and California are differentiated from stands of this association on the basis of the presence of Festuca roemeri.
