Name: Salix boothii / Mesic Forbs Shrubland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This association is known from southern and central Idaho, western Montana, western Colorado, Utah, California, and possibly Wyoming. Stands are found over a broad range of elevations from 1412-3050 m (4630-10,000 feet), and on a variety of positions on the landscape including stream benches, meadows, and seeps located in narrow or broad valley bottoms. In Colorado, this shrubland occurs along shallow, partially peat-filled ponds and on seeps in wide meadows. In Utah, stands occur in narrow to broad mountain meadows with smooth to concave surface topography and organic substrates. The vegetation has a 1-2 m tall-shrub layer that often forms extensive thickets, or willow carrs, on broad montane floodplains. The overstory of this shrubland association is dominated or codominated by Salix boothii and/or Salix drummondiana. Salix geyeriana may codominate with one or both of the above species. Lonicera involucrata and/or Ribes inerme commonly form a low-shrub layer. The dense understory typically includes Heracleum maximum (= Heracleum lanatum), Mertensia spp., Maianthemum stellatum (= Smilacina stellata), Hydrophyllum fendleri, Urtica dioica, and Rudbeckia occidentalis. Although highly variable, graminoid cover is typically less than 20%.
