Name: Valeriana sitchensis Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This alliance is found in subalpine meadows in the mountains of western Washington. Stands occur between 1350-2000 m elevation on east- to northeast-facing, moderate-gradient slopes. Soils are young and poorly developed, due to erosion and lack of weathering. A moderately dense cover and a fairly diverse flora of herbaceous species characterize stands; 30 species is the average number per stand. Valeriana sitchensis and Carex spectabilis dominate the herbaceous canopy. Lupinus arcticus ssp. subalpinus, Polygonum bistortoides, Ligusticum grayi, Potentilla flabellifolia, and Carex nigricans are the most common forb and graminoid species.
