Name: Salix laevigata Temporarily Flooded Woodland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Communities within this alliance are found along drainages in habitats that are seasonally flooded and saturated with freshwater along ditches, floodplains, lake edges, and low-gradient deposits along rivers. Elevations range from 768-1518 m in Utah and sea level to 1700 m in California. Adjacent upslope communities are typically Quercus gambelii and Pinus spp. Soils information was not available. Communities within this association are characterized as cold-deciduous, temporarily flooded woodlands. The tree subcanopy is dominated by at least 40% cover of Salix laevigata. The tree subcanopy also includes 10-40% cover of Platanus racemosa, Populus fremontii, Fraxinus velutina, and Alnus rhombifolia. The shrub layer ranges from 5-20% cover and typically consists of Baccharis pilularis and Sambucus mexicana in California and Baccharis salicifolia, Salix exigua, and Rhus trilobata in southern Utah. Information was not available for the herbaceous layer.
