Description: These forests occur on alluvial flats and terraces with base-rich soils along small streams and historic floodplains of large rivers in the Tamaulipan Thorn Scrub, Edwards Plateau, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, Crosstimbers and Southern Tallgrass Prairie, Upper West Gulf Coastal Plain, and West Gulf Coastal Plain ecoregions in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. Canopy and subcanopy species include ~Ulmus crassifolia, Celtis laevigata, Gleditsia triacanthos, Sapindus saponaria var. drummondii, Carya myristiciformis, Quercus macrocarpa, Quercus nigra, Fraxinus americana, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Crataegus$ spp., and ~Ulmus rubra$. Oaks may be present as scattered individuals, but are never common.
