Name: Pinus jeffreyi / Quercus vacciniifolia - Garrya buxifolia Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This woodland is restricted to a narrow area of serpentine habitat in southwestern Oregon and potentially northwestern California. These woodlands are found entirely at low to mid elevations (averaging 636 m or 3070 feet), on stony (51% cover of surface rock) serpentine or peridotite soils. Aspects tended to be south to southeast, and the slope ranged from 8-35%, but stands were found from ridgetops to draws. It is an open woodland, dominated by Pinus jeffreyi at about 20% cover in the canopy, generally the only tree species found in the canopy and understory. Individuals of Pseudotsuga menziesii, Pinus attenuata, Pinus monticola, and Umbellularia californica are found as understory species at low cover in most stands. These woodlands are characterized by their dense cover of evergreen, broad-leaved shrubs. Quercus vacciniifolia (26%), Garrya buxifolia (22%), Arctostaphylos nevadensis (22%), and Mahonia repens (1%) were found in all sampled stands. Forbs are minor components of these stands, with Xerophyllum tenax, Aspidotis densa, and Whipplea modesta reported.
