Name: Juniperus scopulorum / Artemisia tridentata Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This association has been documented from the portions of Wyoming surrounding the Bighorn Basin, Montana's Greenhorn Range or Colorado's Front Range. In Montana, it occurs on foothills and piedmont fans at elevations ranging between 5500 and 6000 feet. In Montana it has been documented to occur on soils derived from both extrusive igneous and sedimentary-derived, alluvial parent materials. Violent effervescence is found near the soil surface, and the total cover of soil, gravel and rock usually exceeds 70%. On steeper slopes, rill erosion denotes a lack of a soil covering. The Montana expression of this type has a low density of Juniperus scopulorum (constituting less than 20% canopy cover) and a somewhat depauperate undergrowth as well, in which Pseudoroegneria spicata alone or other cool-season grasses in the aggregate have as great, or greater, cover than Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana. Litter and duff are restricted to plant bases leaving much exposed soil and gravel. In Wyoming the dominant big sagebrush is Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis and it contributes even less cover than in the Montana occurrences.
