Name: Schizachyrium scoparium Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This grassland alliance is known only from stands in the rolling plains of southeastern Montana. Stands from Colorado in the Schizachyrium scoparium Herbaceous Vegetation association (former CEGL001680) were recently merged with an association, Schizachyrium scoparium - Bouteloua curtipendula Loess Mixedgrass Herbaceous Vegetation (CEGL002036), in the Schizachyrium scoparium - Bouteloua curtipendula Herbaceous Alliance (A.1225) leaving a single association, Schizachyrium scoparium - Carex inops ssp. heliophila Herbaceous Vegetation (CEGL001682). The moderate to dense herbaceous layer is dominated by the medium-tall, warm-season bunchgrass Schizachyrium scoparium. The shorter graminoid, Carex inops ssp. heliophila, typically codominates. Perennial forbs generally have sparse cover but may be relatively diverse. Annual forbs and grasses may be seasonally present.
