Name: Quercus falcata - Tilia americana var. caroliniana - Magnolia grandiflora / Ilex vomitoria Forest
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: This community is a mid-Atlantic near-coastal forest that occurs on the North Carolina and South Carolina mainland on dry-mesic to mesic soils with a substantial shell component. The canopy is diverse, with Quercus hemisphaerica, Liriodendron tulipifera, Tilia americana var. caroliniana, and Magnolia grandiflora dominant. Subcanopy species are Persea palustris, Ilex opaca var. opaca, Nyssa sylvatica, Acer barbatum, and Cornus florida. Shrubs include Morella cerifera (= Myrica cerifera), Sabal minor, Aesculus pavia var. pavia, Ilex vomitoria, and Callicarpa americana. Woody vines are abundant and diverse. Common herbs include Mitchella repens, Polystichum acrostichoides, Scleria triglomerata, Dichanthelium boscii, and Galium spp. Similar sites may occur south of North Carolina and northern South Carolina, but are probably not common. One site in North Carolina (Colkin's Neck) is described as Quercus falcata - Magnolia grandiflora - Tilia americana var. caroliniana / Ilex vomitoria Forest (M. Schafale pers. comm.). Additional information will be added from North Carolina Vegetation Survey plot data. Further information from South Carolina is needed to determine the extent and classification of this community.
