Description: This ponderosa pine community is found in the Black Hills of western South Dakota in the United States. Stands occur on sandy loams to silt loams on flat to gently sloping topography. The dominant tree is Pinus ponderosa. No other mature trees have been found in the canopy. There is a poorly developed shrub layer containing species such as Spiraea betulifolia and Symphoricarpos albus. The scattered herb layer is made up mostly of Oryzopsis asperifolia, with lesser amounts of Carex siccata (= Carex foenea), Galium boreale and Schizachne purpurascens.
